When your power goes out Please call Commonwealth Edison first! It is a common misperception that Com Ed knows you are without power. They may not. Com Ed works on a system of reported outages by its customers. Every customer is serviced by a particular “line." That line has a designation and a listing of customers on that line. When a customer calls this creates a ticket in Com Ed’s computer system for work to be done to restore power. And, it is best if the individual customer calls Com Ed and gives their address and contact information just in case Com Ed needs to get a hold of you.
You can also call the Village to let us know that you are without power but our follow up call to Com Ed is to try and expedite matters or obtain status updates not report individual outages. Again, it is best if the individual calls and generates a work ticket.
During storms, especially ones with heavy rain or high winds, our personnel are mainly on the streets attending to downed power lines, tree branches or limbs that have fallen across the roads or street flooding. This leaves 1-maybe 2 911 operators to handle emergency calls. So if you experience delays in calling the village, and it is not an immediate emergency, you may wish to call back in a few minutes.
A common misconception for those with underground services is that they can't be out of power. There are 3 answers to this misconception:
The line comes above ground somewhere
It could be a fault in the line caused somewhere else
Com Ed may need to de-energize the entire line to fix a problem
One last thing, tree branches are the enemy of electrical reliability. If you have tree branches that come close to or overhang power lines you may wish to have them professionally trimmed. Only trained professionals should operate near power lines. If the branch contacts the line it could short and you will be without power until Com Ed restores it.
If you have an electric emergency it is important to call ComEd immediately. Never email your emergency request. If you need to report an emergency situation such as a fire, vehicle accident, electric contact / shock, or other potential danger please call 911 to notify local authorities.
