Roadway and Infrastructure Improvements Program

[ARCHIVED] Construction Update – 2023 Roadway & Infrastructure Improvements – Phase 2 Week of June 19, 2023

Beginning Monday, June 19th the Contractor will continue Roadway Reconstruction on N. Elm Street between Bryn Mawr Avenue and E. North Street. The work will interrupt driveway access in this section of Elm Street from 7:00 AM on Monday, June 19th until 5:00 PM on Tuesday, June 26th with notifications delivered to affected residents. On Monday, June 19th, the Contractor will install a stringline to guide the curb forming machine and will grade the aggregate base course. The curb and gutter will be placed on Tuesday, June 20th and Wednesday, June 21st. After curb placement the driveway aprons will be installed and the parkway area rough graded for future placement of topsoil (6-inches thick) and sod. The roadway aggregate base will be fine graded on Thursday, June 22nd and Friday, June 23rd, for the placement of asphalt. On Monday, June 26th the asphalt will be placed to a nominal 2 inches below final grade and the access to driveways restored by 5:00 PM, weather permitting. The final two-inches of surface course will be placed after completion of work that may mar the surface. Manhole protector tings will be placed at the protruding manholes until final surface is placed. Please use caution around the manholes.

The Contractor will be installing water mains on N. Linden Street between E. North Street and E. Division Street and will install water main on E. North Street between N. Linden Street and N. Rush Street. Later in the week the Contractor will be installing storm sewer on E. North Street beginning at N. Elm Street and proceeding east to N. Rush Street.

The Contractor will be installing storm sewer on N. Oak Street between W. Center Street and W. North Street. 

Nicor Gas will be lowering gas services on N. Maple Street between W. Center Street and W. North Street.

N. Elm Street, N. Oak Street, E. North Street and N. Linden Street will be closed to through traffic and traffic will be detoured.

Looking ahead to the week of June 26th, the Contractor will begin excavating for the roadway on W. Center Street between Maple Street and approximately 250 feet west of N. Willow Street. More information for the week will be in next week’s update.

Work is expected to occur weekdays between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Through traffic will be detoured around the work areas. We thank you for your patience. 

During this work expect the following:

  • All roads will be open to emergency vehicles.
  • Utility work (ComEd, Nicor Gas, MCI, etc.) along the project area will be taking place throughout construction.
  • Heavy Construction Equipment, material deliveries, material storage in parkways and construction noise will be present from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily and at times until dusk.
  • The construction will create dust and debris.  The Contractor will work to minimize the impacts.
  • Access to driveways may be briefly interrupted - Workers will inform residents of driveway interruption prior to its occurrence.
  • Temporary truck staging is expected on roadways and adjacent streets.
  • Please Use CAUTION in around the construction site.
  • The schedule is weather dependent.
